    LOL.
    Cool deal.
I think it’s the Season = “All work and no pay”.
It’s going around, Kellync. It’s not you.
    Keep in touch.
    And thanks.

I missed your posts…both of them.
    I apologize.
First…I do not do the type of curb work you’re thinking of.
That said…my best advice would be to visit a store or two and read the cans.
ICI stores = Glidden…(and…by the way…they were just bought by Akzo – Nobel. Rumor has it that they may go back to the Glidden name), PPG Stores = Pittsburg Paint Group = (Good Paint!) and the old standby…Sherwin Williams stores are everywhere. Each chain has about 3000 – 3500 locations.
Next…if you’re required or asked to install glass beads…check out the “Dry Times”. We all want fast dry…but you’ll be “Broadcasting” = tossing the glass beads into the paint…BEFORE IT DRIES…kinda side armed = “Broadcasting”…so…make sure the Dry Time isn’t TOO short. Certainly ambient temperature and whether or not the curb is in the Sunshine or Shade will effect this.
Last…JM…it may be simply trial and error.
I hope you do this. I hope you find a niche. I hope you work out the kinks and make a fun living.
I wish I could help more…but…like you…?…it’s not my forte.
I also think that this ma be why many Stripers do not offer this service.
    And…therefore…you may do well.
Now…before I go…I did paint my numbers onto my curb at my house. I taped off a nice rectangle. I hand rolled…using a 4″ cabinet roller…White Latex Traffic Paint. I had beads ready to throw…and I did. Then…I sprayed the Black spray paint numbers. I also threw beads into the Black…before it dried. I was fine with the work.
    Keep in touch.

    Hello again.
We talked a while ago…I believe about this topic.
Did you since find any help?
Other than simply …almost demanding…a sketch or “Blueprint” from the customer…that you could then refer to in your bid…I’d be a afraid to bid. God forbid you show up with the wrong design. (Then I’d get upset thinking…OH YEAH NOW you’re telling me there’s a standard…!)
That said…can your customer easily get you in contact with the specification?…i.e. the Type “E” callout they’re going by? I can see why you’re frustrated. I would be too.
Where are you in the process?

    Hello Raymond
Here’s some info that I received from Graco…
    “Dan,
I think the best bet over that way would be Linetech in St. Catherines, ON, or Stinson Equipment located in Montreal.
    Merry Christmas. “
Raymond…I hope this helps…keep in touch.

    Hello Raymond.
    How are you?
The “G” that just posted above yours is the Graco Rep for California…and…”New Business Development”. He also covers a few states around there…in the West.
However…I’m sure he knows the Reps for your neck of the woods too.
I’ll email him…he may not be in at work…it’s 6:30 AM out there…it must be nice waking up on the beach Christmas Eve.
    Anyhow…good guy.
Will you make the Nashville Show?…in Jan.?

in reply to: What to buy? #5919

    Hello Dean
…I just posted on your other question…
Now for this one…yes I like the 2800. I’ve sold a couple…to a couple! They love it. The comparables are very similar…and…(read my other post = grab it…etc.)…and…look at the price points.
    (ask for perks = stencil…book…tips)
And…I tell people…you won’t outgrow it. By that I mean…in a couple years…if you purchase another…you may buy a Hydraulic unit. BUT…you won’t sell the Mechanical 2800. You’ll keep it…use it for the other color = Spray White Stop Bars with the 2800 and spray Yellow Lines with the 4900…or…give it to your help and say…”You knock out all the Yellow Curbs while I spray the Yellow lines”…etc.
You won’t outgrow it….I doubt you’ll sell it…and…it’ll do the job.
    I hope this helps.
    Keep in touch.

    Hello Dean
I saw your other post…I’ll answer it too. Yes!. I will expand on that…in a minute.
    But here…
    1) Do an online search for “Pavement Maintenance Expo”.
    Results should show “Pavement Online”?
    Anyhow…there are (2) shows in the category…
    A) …is in Las Vegas…first week of December. They always span Wednesday evening…? to Sunday Noon?…you’ll see the schedules.
    B) Is in the East = sometimes in Nashville…sometimes in the Carolinas…sometimes Fla. I believe this Winter the East Show is in Jan.? Do the search.
Also…I just received my Edition of Pavement Mag. It contains the schedules for all the Classes and Seminars.
Your cost?…= Certainly travel…Hotel…and I would recommend the Hotel the Convention is in. I’ve stayed there twice and I stayed at a nearby Hotel and walked 2 blocks. That wasn’t bad…but I’m spoiled. Costs also include entrance to the floor = cheap. You’ll get to see ALL MFG’S…!
    Grab each one.
    Walk it down the aisle.
    Pop a wheelie.
Get it up to “Striping Speed”…
    STOP IT!…kinda like you’re at a curb.
    Pull it backwards.
    How does it feel?
Talk to REPS. Ask warranties. Ask Exchange Policies. Ask Return Shipping Policies. Ask about PERKS.
(I wonder if you’d get a free book on “How I Stripe” with your purchase?)
Let me know if you go…or to which one.
Additional costs would be…if you’re interested in the noted classes…ranging on …everything.
    Call…wait…I’ll be right back…oh it’s right here…ok…all I see is the site = http://www.pavementonline.com
But again…that site seems cluttered to me…I just searched for … national pavement expo … It came up first. It always does. Click it. It’s all right there.
Now…the other post…well…I’ll go to the other post…
    See ya!

    Hello Jed
    You and I have talked.
I am going to let this post go.
I think it’s a good question…especially for anyone thinking about entering the striping business.
For the readers…you…(Jed)…and I have spoken about this same topic a few days back.
I do want to hear other people comment.
How do you…(Readers)…(Experienced Stripers)…make your lines straight?
    …not just 18 footers…36 footers?…and longer channelizing lanes?…150′ of Double Yellow?…
And…what goes through your head when you approach an “uneven” lot?
Jed…your book should arrive today = Sat.
And…maybe find a lot that fits you friend’s definition of “uneven”.
I remember when I decided to buy my first Striping Machine. I said to my wife…”But I don’t even have a job”…she replied…”Yeah, but you’ll have a real nice Striping Machine!”.
    See ya.

in reply to: Feathered edges #5908

    Hello Tomstripe
    You’ll do fine.
What type machine do you have? The RPM statement has me intrigued.
As far as the edges are concerned…the machine should do most of the work.
That said…new tips are always a good idea…that I sometimes forget to embrace.

in reply to: Glass Beads- single or dual coated beads? #5905

    OK I’m back.
I received an email yesterday that had an attachment.
It dealt with speed of the vehicle etc. = more to do with application than “why are they coated…and…what do the differences in coatings produce…i.e. dual coatings?”
So…I asked my email to be forwarded to someone else.
This morning I received an email confirming that it was…forwarded.
I’ll be back later after work. I hope to have more.

in reply to: Good Comparison list on striping machines #5904

    Thanks Renee
I do want to be perfectly clear.
I’ve just used my Graco 3900 for probably 50,000 feet…last week…= 27,000′ of a double yellow line…10,300′ at THEE Ohio State University…11,400′ on Glick Rd…(like you know where that is!)…and Meijers Grocery Store…The Sports Barn…The LTD…did I mention the schools?…and it never quit.
Next…I never cleaned it either. I do run water through it though…once…when I change colors. Twice to actually clean it. It’s proving to be a nice little machine. It’s one year old…well…one season old.
Next…next…I will use Alkyd for the first time soon…this year. Welcome to Ohio. I’ll use my Conventional. (You can see more on this machine on my site.)
Someone once said…The Conventional is like the Harley Davidson of stripers. It may not be your first machine…(it was mine)…but you may try one…one day.
I do sell Titan’s from my site. Please don’t buy unless we talk first.
I will also hook up a friend in Pennsylvania with the Graco Rep., as soon as I hear back.
I want you to have what’s good for you. I want you to succeed.
    Keep in touch.

in reply to: Glass Beads- single or dual coated beads? #5902

    Raymond
I called Potters. That’s the glass bead company.
It was their link I supplied earlier.
I did talk to someone about the coatings…but I got off the phone too quickly.
I was left with a few unanswered questions.
    So…now it’s Saturday…and I’ll call again Monday.
That said…I have a truck parking lot to stripe and stencil…then a “Sports Barn”.
Anyhow….I may call them from my truck.
    I’ll be in touch.
Last…I’m with you…how can another “coat” of something make that much of a difference.
Take a look at that first link I supplied. It does mention coatings. It mentions them as though different coatings would adhere to different binders. But it doesn’t go any further.
    I’ll figure it out.
    I’ll be in touch.
OK last…last…I may ask Paveman to put these last few posts into a new topic called Thermo. Maybe then someone else can pitch in.
    I’ll be back.
    Dan
OK…I’m back already. I went to http://www.pottersbeads.com There’s a section on info. I’ve read it. All it said was that their beads could be used on…blah…blah…all stuff. But nothing about “coated”. So…I sent in a question via their email. As soon as I hear…I’ll get back.
    Thanks again.

in reply to: Glass Beads- single or dual coated beads? #5899

    Canadian Road Striper
    Try this link…http://www.potterseurope.org/documents/highways/highwaybeadsts-english.pdf
I always thought the beads had to do with size.
I’ve used “standard” beads when I would apply Thermoplastic to an “Off Road” application = a ring road to a hospital or small intersection or a Shopping Center entrance.
I was then required to use a Federal Spec beads to paint (2) airports. Again…I thought it had to do with size and therefore…reflectivity = the larger the diameter = the more it would “sit up” in the certain mil thickness of paint…and reflect the light of the cars…planes.
    So…when you said…”double coated”…I immediately though you meant…a double drop system…now…reference this link… http://www.advancedstripingequipment.com/contact.html
Take a look at the “Double Drop Bead System”…vs. the “Single Drop System”.
This is what I thought you meant = Two “Coats” of beads. Now…just to finish this thought = the first bead dispenser…dispenses the “big” beads…then the second bead dispenser…dispenses the “little” beads…= two “coats”…simultaneously.
Anyhow…Potters Beads will have some kind of coating on them…but I’m still not too sure it would adversely effect things.
Have I helped? Is anything here useful?
    Let me know.

in reply to: Trailer? Do I need one for my striping equipment? #5897

    Hey Tomstripe
I think you may have a few things going on.
    1) The dust = yes. What actually happens is this…the paint hits the ground and the dirt grabs it…then the dirt gets blown away from the force…carrying the paint with it. So…if you’re only getting “rough edges” at dusty points…I’d just keep going.
    2) The pressure…I’ve been one to “UP” the pressure…or I hate to say this…maybe the paint is too thick…”reduce it”. I run anywhere from 1800 to 2200 PSI. I just striped (1) mile of a centerline over a milled off road = rough AND dirty…yes I know…the sweeper was supposed to do a good job…blahblah. I had 2250 PSI in a .019 tip…just so I could drive a little more quickly. A 21 would’ve been better. Let’s face it…they’re “Temp” lines.
    Again…1800 to 2200 PSI.
    3) The “Revving”. Wanna hear something? Mine did the same thing. I thought I was out of gas…but I knew better. I think what’s going on with mine is this…do you know that little sleeve inside the gas tank filler?…when it spins…you can still engage the cap and tighten it…but…now it cannot breathe…so…the gas supply cannot get to where it needs to go. So…? I loosen the cap and she starts “breathing” and the gas flows…and I stripe. So…while this may not be the source of your revving…the next time it “revs”…quickly loosen the gas cap…let me know if it does the trick.
    Bottom line…
    1) don’t worry about the dust. If you pull the trigger and the stripe hits the ground and then goes away in a split second…stripe it again.
    2) Maybe…maybe add a cup of water to reduce the paint. Latex.
    3) Put the pressure to about 1900 PSI.
    4) Loosen the gas cap…what a drag…to see if the revving goes away almost immediately. Honda.
    Keep in touch.
    Dan
