    Hey Brad
…not sure where in the country you are…so…
    Perform an online search for:
National Pavement Expo. It’s in January, Nashville TN. It’ll come up. You’ll find it.
I think it’s the third weekend in Jan…?
    AND…
ATSSA = American Traffic Safety Services Association.
The latter is in San Diego.
And…again…Brett…( who is thee man on this forum = it’s all his…and…he has a marketing company too…)
…will be speaking at the Nashville Expo.
    ( God, I hope I can make it. )
    It’s a nice time.
    How’s that?

in reply to: athletic field striping #6490

    Hello Brad…yes and yes.
I even striped the fields with my old Conventional. Yes, pushing 270 pounds over a bumpy yard…!
    That was too hard.
Next…I also have striped Lacrosse and Soccer. I used my Airless then. Times had changed.
    But…with Graco’s Field Lazer and Titan’s 800…( Now the 850 )…those price points and almost every the City’s School budget…those days…for me…are gone.
    1) I’d ask too much for their budget.
    2) They can honestly buy a small machine…for their district…share it…etc…and stripe the football field several times during the season.
    3) They can also stripe the playground too.
All that said…I still striped for my City’s School District…up until last year…when they cut that completely from the budget.
Next…a suburb here stripes their own…which includes multiple Soccer Fields, Middle School Football…etc…at multiple parks and schools.
    There’s all the info.
And…your locale may be totally different. Your AD could read…”We Stripe Parking Lots, Playgrounds, Athletic Fields and Floors”. ( I use the word STRIPE on purpose. It separates us all from STRIPPERS…! )
Next…my machine sits more than it runs these days. That said…I have a few more to do…and…I just finished up on a floor. It was a Two Part Epoxy. There’s still work out there…but yes, it’s only a few and here and there.
Last…as your career progresses your “Season” will lengthen.
My first year ended in September…!…then November…now December. Every year you’ll stripe a little longer and also start a little sooner.
    Did I help?
Oh…make sure you consider the National Pavement Expo. Brett is speaking there…!
    Thanks.

in reply to: Universal Paint? #6486

    Hello D
    How are you?
First of all…yes, I had to laugh about the “Cottage Cheese” reference. I’ve been there. That’s exactly what we called it.
As far as the paint…you are more a man than I am…if you’re willing to spray Solvent on fresh seal. I’ve had SW Acetone turn light brown over old…OLD…stripes…!…that were on OLD seal. It was just a Re-stripe, too! It wasn’t everywhere…but I had to touch it up. AND…AND…you have to wait. It may turn brown in 10 seconds…or…OR…10 minutes later…!
Next…in Ohio…we’re not allowed to use any solvents. SO…we use Acetone.
As for me…I try hard to use Latex throughout the year…up to and including…I’ll sub the job out if it demands Acetone…and all I have is Latex in the machine…and more latex work coming. Again…I’ll sub out the Acetone work…not just because…but for the reasons you stated too: the clean up is not fun, switching isn’t either.
    SO…my only advice is this…
    1) Let’s both look for a Regional Manufacturer.
    2) I try to buy “normal” Set Fast via SW. THEN…when weather cools…I switch to the Hot Line.
Hot Line has a few things going for it.
    1) 67% solids. With that amount…two things…
    A) I use a .021 tip. Maybe a .019 would work.
    B) That many solids displace the water = LESS water…= dry times are fast.
    C) AND…it’s touted as a “Fast Dry”. I do like it on cool days…and October evenings…etc. Now…it’s all I use.
SO…bottom line…until we find one…or make our own…maybe the 67% solid feature will look better on your layouts.
    Last…it looks fine on mine…but again…I use a .021. Maybe that helps.
If you’re already using HL…we’re down to one option.
    Did I help?

in reply to: weather effecting paint? #6485

    Hello Brad
I try to use normal SW paint throughout the season. Then, I switch to Hot Line when it gets cooler in OH…like now.
Practically, the SW store normally stocks only one type of paint…the Hot Line…no big deal.
Next…as far as the clumping goes…last night, we had trouble getting our 4-5 inch line…without lifting the gun to a ridiculous height. SO…we added a cup or two of water…to the 4 gallons. We stirred. We cycled…and all was well. The line was fine. We lowered our guns…again…all was well.
Try that. I know it gets cool. I know the paint doesn’t want to cooperate.
A splash of water may help…without actually hurting the paint.
    Let me know.
    Dan

in reply to: easy money or not? #6483

    Hello Brad
First…we all go through just what you went through. You didn’t do anything wrong. You probably helped out of a sense of kindness. No big deal.
    Here are my options:
    1) I can always give my Minimum Price.
    2) It must be a cash deal. AND…if my gut even suspects that there’s no cash in his pocket…I can’t do the job.
    3) I have to have EVERYTHING I need to do this right now and once.
    4) Clear the lot…or at least what I need to do.
If anything varies…it’s really up to you. If you have a card party to make …and you promised your wife you’d mow the lawn… if your kid is starting on the varsity game for the first time…etc…or…or…if the first job had a low profit margin and we’re 25 miles from home…this little job may really help. You decide.
Next…here are a few tips to save time…if you decide to get the job:
If there are HC… ( it sounds like a small lot…maybe 2 HC…? )…can you simple lay yours on top…trace around it with chalk…slide your HC aside…hand roll the Blue…let it dry…slide your HC back on top and spray?…WHILE…your helper uses masking tape to tape off the arrows and hand rolls them…or sprays them…? OR…while the Blue dries…or is being hand rolled…you use a strip if plastic…like from a scrap stencil…to act as the tape…on the arrows. ( Really though, I can tape off and spray an arrow in less than 60 seconds…and so can you…) I always have a roll of tape, 1.5″ wide hanging on the machine.
RECAP…whatever color is in my machine…that’s where I start. Yellow…?…then I’ll tape and spray the yellow arrows while my help hand rolls the Blue. OR…if I have White in the machine…I’ll start the Blues and he can start taping all the arrows.
    Next…I have a couple more things to say…hope you’re not bored…
I go the the paint store and buy a 5 gallon bucket of white. I have them pop the little cork on top and add 14 to 20 ounces of blue. Shake it. Next…I also buy a new empty bucket and a 9″ roller handle with a roller pad. (Dollar Stores sell these too. )
I then pour 2 gallons of the fresh, new blue into the new empty bucket. I dip the roller into it and LEAVE IT THERE. Snap the lid on. THAT bucket is my “BLUE BLOCK” bucket. Why?…because it’ll pick up debris…like pebbles and sand. Now…I cannot spray from that bucket. IF…IF…I ever need to spray blue…I use the fresh clean blue bucket. Does that make sense?
And…after 20 Blue Blocks…I simply pour in a couple more gallons from the fresh blue to replenish the “dirty” blue. Does that make sense?
And…store the roller in the bucket. It may last you all season.
    OK…now I’m rambling.
Brad…I hope I helped. And…do not be afraid of not getting the job…because you bid fair. If I’m not going to make anything…I may as well go home.
    Did I help?
    Dan
    …you know what…?…I have a little more…
You asked about a good price…here’s my opinion.
I know this may sound juvenile…but, my barometer is this…”Is it fair?” If it’s not fair…I don’t want to play. I’ll find a different game.
Do not be afraid to offer costs to the person wanting the work.
    In other words…
    1) If MY help gets 12.50 an hour…and because of dry times…moving cones…that’s 2 hours…that’s a starting bid of 25.00. BUT…there’s 20% more for Unemployment and SS…etc…so…he gets 50.00.
    2) If the paint is 4 gallons…that’s 15.00 each = 60.00 more.
    3) If I get 35.00 per hour…then that’s 70.00 more.
    4) GTO = Gas, Ties and Oil = overhead = 40.00 per hour = 80.00 more.
Estimate may be…180.00 to 260.00. Again…you need to decide this range.
    Let’s say you say 250.00.
    Here’s what happens…the owner then says…HEY MAN…you’re here…!
    OK…that’s not fair. If I weren’t…it’d be 260.00. Since I am here…it’s NOTHING? That’s not fair to my wife…who needs shoes…kids who needs books…to me, who has upkeep, repairs…and I’m good…and I AM right her…etc. SO…let’s meet half way…220.00.
Again…it may sound juvenile…but my offer is fair…to everyone.
Brad, you decide some of this. But…if I decide I have the time…but it’s just not a good or fair offer…I’ll be headin’ home.
    I hope I helped.

in reply to: storage of my graco 3900 questions #6480

    Hello Brad
I just clean out my machine in normal fashion.
The only difference is that I pour maybe a half gallon of Anti Freeze into the last few gallons of water…that’s it.
And…yes…I run it through the Prime…then the Gun Line. Then I just turn off my machine…all normally.
    Next…the “only” benefit is this…
“Some” mechanics will argue “dissimilar metal corrosion”. That’s where IF you put (2) different metals together…side by side…they’ll corrode right where they touch…just because they’re different metals.
SO…let’s put some kind of a lube in there. That’s it.
Next…some may offer a different type of liquid to help keep things lubed up during the off season…or any longer “down time”.
However, Anti-Freeze is simple to get…I tend to have some around because of the car and truck…!…and any more…it’s a bit more Eco Friendly. That’s it. It’s not something to loose sleep over. It’s probably in the “GOOD, BETTER, BEST” category…not so much a “Right vs. Wrong” category.
    Does that help?
    Let me know.
    Dan
P.S. Remember…you also have a lawn mower. It also just sits through the Winter. I’ll bet yours…like mine…has never been “Winterized” in any fashion. My lawn mower is fine. Again…take the best care of it that you can…but…I wouldn’t loose sleep over it.
    I hope that all helps.
    Dan

in reply to: storage of my graco 3900 questions #6477

    Hey Brad…how are you?
    First…I have a 3900 also.
Next…go door to door. Find the right lot and just give them a bid.
    ( Remember…self standing buildings where the owner is inside…like a church, realty office…etc. )
Walk in and say…”Hi. Can I stripe your parking lot for 180.00? I have a real striping machine…not an upside down spray can.
I’ll make sure all the lines are the same length and straight. I’ll work after hours…you won’t be bothered. Can I?”
Next…get an ad in the Yellow Pages for 100.00. You don’t need a 600.00 ad 1/3 page. Get the 1/2 inch ad.
    Mine says…
    American Striping.
We stripe parking lots, streets, playgrounds and floors.
Then there’s the address and phone.
    That’s it.
As a note…I try to use the word STRIPE…notice my second sentence. There are many individuals that will read STRIPING…as…STRIPPING…and ask…”What do you STRIP?”…like floors, cars…furniture…etc.
( And…yes…every STRIPER that’s been in business for 10 years or more…has MANY stories of people wanting STRIPPERS. )
SO…I try to use the word STRIPE. ( I have 1000 stories…! ALL are funny. )
Next…anti freeze…it’s totally up to you. I just cleaned my machine for the …third…?…time so far this year…?
I used anti freeze to flush it out…well…water and a splash of anti freeze.
Again…you put it in whenever you think it could use a lube…or when it’s going to freeze outside and your machine is vulnerable.
Just pretend it’s your car. Your car ALWAYS has anti freeze in it. You cannot use it too much.
    How’s that?
Keep in touch. I’d like to know how you’re doing. Let me know if I can help any further.

in reply to: New in the business; lacking a good line striper #6476

    Hello azharr
    …almost…! It would’ve been a great deal.
It sounds like you’re well on your way.
As for the Crack Fill and Seal…that may be best answered in those Forums.
I’ll be around for striping, though.
    Keep in touch.
    Dan

in reply to: New in the business; lacking a good line striper #6474

    Hello Azharr
NO…! The trouble with “rolling” the line is two fold…:
    1) It’s uglier than the Upside Down Spray Can job…and…
    2) It is sooo hard…it’s back breaking.
On the perfect lot…which does not exist…it MAY work…maybe.
BUT…almost all lots have irregularities. It would be like trying to roll Stucco.
    Yes…you could use a roller with a “Nap” of 3/4″ = …a big floppy roller…to get into all the cracks…tiny holes…ruts…etc.
BUT…the edges would be too ugly.
AND…you will pick up debris like…pine needles…or just plain ol’ gritty grit.
    …don’t do it.
Next…here’s the first answer…RENT. Only some Tool Rental Shops carry Airless Line Striping Machines. Try that though. You may be one of the lucky ones…who finds a rental nearby.
Next…both Graco and Titan have a 1300.00 to 1500.00 machine. Graco = the Field Laser and Titan = the PL850. ( PL = Parking Lot. )
Both have bike tires and you can only walk 1 MPH while spraying…but…at least you know.
Next…keep this in mind…the reason you cannot find a good used Line Striper…is because they are precious. Buying one isn’t a bad idea.
IF…if…you RENT one and try it … then…if…if…you BUY one to stripe yourself…I really doubt you’ll let it go. It’ll make you a living.
Last…that said…rent the Field Laser or the PL 850. Try it. Then…if you have the cash…BUY the next machine UP = Graco’s 3400…or Titan’s 2850. Both machine can do anything. Both machines allow you to walk 3 MPH = you’ll get done…!
Bottom line…don’t “roll”. Sub…if you need to. Rent if you can…just to see what you may learn.
    How’s that?
    Let me know.
    Keep in touch.

in reply to: Road Striping #6473

    Hello again, Bran.
    Here’s what I have…
My unit is the (3) Pump, (2) Color Graco Road Laser…or LaZer…whichever you prefer…!
It has the “Crazy Wheel” on the back.
First…the entire unit attaches to my truck via (2) Ball Hitches. They’re 32″ apart…?…I think…I forget now.
( I always get people asking…”What do you pull?” It looks like I have a Square Dual Exhaust from the 50s on my truck. )
    Then…the actual, entire unit is on that 6′ x 4’…? “Trailer”…ish…

Then…behind it is the “Crazy Wheel”.
    It’s a trailer sized wheel…that is on a complete swivel thingy…that goes anywhere…any direction…anywhere…easily.
You don’t need another “steering wheel”.
SO…I’m just used to that. It does not need a driver or another “steering wheel”…etc.

NEXT…my partner had both the Crazy Wheel…and…the Skid mounted unit.
Some would cut the unit. like mine, and weld it onto a skid…or just slide it into the back of a truck…or onto a flat bed.
THEN…you would experience a need for a wheel of sorts when going around a curve. If not…the Line would “cut the corner”…and “Short” the other lane…!…aaaggghhh.
Picture one of those huge, LONG Fire Engines that has the Driver in the back to turn those rear wheels. That’s what you would need…or something, obviously, less sophisticated to turn the gun or allow it to slide toward the Center of your truck…while striping a curve…so as NOT to follow the actual truck…and therefore NOT “Short” the other, “opposing” lane.
    Does that make sense? I hope I painted a clear picture. ( Get it…?…”painted” a clear picture…! )…sorry…couldn’t resist.
Anyhow…with my Crazy Wheel…I just don’t have that bad luck or trouble.
With the (2) ball hitches…the unit is forced to stay behind my truck…and NOT “trail” when I turn. The Crazy Wheel does the work.

Bottom line…check out the “Skid Mounted Units” vs. the Units like mine…Crazy Wheel Units….etc.
And…keep in mind…in the one scenario…it was a nice unit…that someone wanted to slide into or onto a truck that caused trouble.
( I’m betting Graco would not send out a unit that wouldn’t turn…or…MFG a unit without that capability. )
Bryan, thanks for the questions…I hope I helped…keep looking into roads…keep in touch.
    Dan

in reply to: Road Striping #6472

    Hello Bryan…no apologies necessary…
I have the (3) pump, two color, pull behind type.
    It’s a great unit.
I have a partner in that area. He’s the one who travels and stripes. I use the “ride ons” to stripe here in town…that’s all mine.
Let me get back to you on that.
    On your next question…Yes.
    What you’ve described is a (4) lane road…that …therefore has (3) “Lane Lines”.
    I can bid 14 cents per foot. OR…I could say 700.00 per mile…( .14 x 5280 = 739.20. )…or less.
Whatever you need to do to get the job…get it.
    Yes…it’s that simple.
SO…now comes the competition…from TWO places.
    1) If you get 700..00 per Lane Line…someone else may say…”what are the specs?”
    Bryan…if the specs are 4′ ON and 40′ OFF…holy cow…I’d take less…wouldn’t you?
    2) The contractor may very well buy something to stripe that himself. He’d train a worker…that would be their job…hourly…even though it’s Prevailing Wage…the contractor would make a profit.
Those are your (2) main competitors.
That said…there are plenty of crews that mill for temporary and do not have the man power or care to stripe.
Look around. Don’t rule out a trip or two…maybe to the next county; rural roads…small townships…etc.
Next…you seem to be in a good spot to test the water. Ask a contractor or two if they’d Sub the work…for their temp striping or if they ever bid “Long Lines” for other Municipalities. It’ll get them thinking. Maybe they’ll hire you…maybe this is their “IN” to the smaller Suburbs…etc.
    Bryan…you never know.
Recap…I do not see a problem with the Road Laser on curves. If I ever sell mine…I’ll let you know.
And…if you ever buy from the Great Graco…they’ll show you how.
And…yes…the entire length is a starting point. It’s the price I always get. It’s how I bid.
The selling point is this…I’m there…with the Asphalt Paving Crew. Tell me where to be and when.
    Here’s the translation…when WE ALL pull away…BILL IT…right then.
New topic…if you have a Rider…Graco or Lazy Liner or Titan…you CAN temp stripe now.
The milling crew will have a Zone. They mill the “Curb Lanes” first…in a “Race Track” form. When those are done…they stop traffic…they’ll let it = traffic…”bleed out”. Then…when all cars are through…they “move” traffic to the Curb Lanes…and then Mill the “interior”.
You can stripe the Lane Lines then…and then wait until the crew is done with the Interior…laying it out as you can.
Then…when they are completely done…stripe it. Go home. Again…when they pull away…they can bill it. Milled and striped.
If you need to talk “Riders” call me. There (3) MFG’s to choose from. I’ll tell you everything.
    Now…for this bottom line…
You can try to get some temp striping under your belt, now.
You can use a rider and a nice striping machine…such as:
    Titan 4950.
    Graco 3900.
    Graco 200HS.
…or ANYTHING bigger…( from these two MFGs )…but these will do the job…easily.
    Bryan, I talk too much.
Let’s meet at the next Pavement Show. Rumor has it that it’s in Nashville…this February.
I’ll introduce you to a Graco guy or two.
    How’s that?
    And…if I haven’t exactly answered your questions…let me know.
( I’ll post again on my partner’s view of curves. )
    Dan

in reply to: Road Striping #6470

    Hey Brian
    How are you?
    Let’s talk “Temporary Striping”, first.
I love road striping. I have a 3 pump Road Lazer. I also use a Line Lazer behind a little Graco 3900. ( That’s like one of those Jet Skiis…!) Be careful.
    I’m always inside a Zone…or moving so quickly…I don’t need one. I’ll have a truck follow me…etc.
There aren’t any cars. I know that sounds different…but it’s true.
The work goes quickly. I always find shade if I have to wait…etc.
The pay is good and the margins are great.
Next…whenever I’m given a map…all dimensions should be there. I’ve never “wheeled it”.
In my experience…it’s always by the foot…per lane…per mile.
AND…we get paid from Point “A” to Point “B”.
SO…if it’s a two lane road…there’s ONE Lane Line. It that road is 1.25 miles long…then we price it for the entire 1.25 miles.
    That means…right through the intersections…etc.
    Here’s the thought…if I lay out and SNAP a parking lot…then go home…do I get paid…? Nope.
    I should though…it was work. SO…again…the entire length of the job…even if it’s not painted…such as 4′ ON and 40′ OFF…= a 4′ “DOT”…then a 40′ “GAP”.
I get paid for the OFF section too.
    I hope that make sense.
Next…often, contractors will ask for the price per mile. I give that in dollars…500.00…600.00…etc…per Lane Line, Per Mile.
    Again…that’s per Lane LINE.
Again…if it’s a THREE lane road = One Lane North…One Lane South…and that One Suicide Lane in the middle…then you will probably paint the TWO Yellow Lines common to the Suicide lane…so…
…if that road is 3.9 miles…then you bid …3.9 miles TWICE.
    Does that make sense?
Next…you will have a DECELERATION LANE…here and there = “Decel Lane”. I don’t worry about those. I bid the entire length “times” the number of Lane Lines.
AND…that goes for a Solid Line or a Dotted Line. Obviously the Dots cots less to produce = more margin of profit.
Next…on Temporary Striping…we do not have to do ALL work on the Temp.
We only stripe the Lane Lines…dots…decels…that’s about it. We still “kinda” lay it out…we do make it look nice.
The price is a little less…but it’s quick and margins are nice.
    Next…we aren’t required to stripe Crosswalks…Stop Bars…etc. BUT…sometimes we do…just because…in this one or two jobs…here and there…it may be best.
    That’s it.
Bid the job per lane line, per mile. Get that number.
    Then…figure costs.
The rest is up to you. Come down in price to get your feet in the door…etc.
    Next…painting the Legends = Words…Directional Arrows…etc.
    1) Again…we do not have to do these on a Temp. Sometimes I do. If ever just decided to make that ONE lane that turns RIGHT ONLY…I will probably make that “Channelizing LANE” = that ONE SOLID WHITE, 8″ wide Lane Line…solid…then hand spray a big white Right Turn Arrow. No big deal. Fun. Again…it’s all Temp. But…we do a good job.
    2) But…on a Total Re-stripe…you will. ( Obviously…paint everything. )
That bidding seems too easy. If you’re a seasoned striper…you have those numbers…those costs.
    ( And here…we’re talking about paint…not Thermoplastic = Thermo. )
Next…on painting the “Top Course”…there may be two types of Glass beads…
    One is the “regular” type.
The other may be called out. It’s a “better”
    …bigger…more reflective…etc…bead. Buy those.
Next…there’s also a paint call out. In Ohio the paint could be Hot Line. It passes a certain test…etc. You’ll need to show that is what you’re using…what you bought …etc. Easy stuff. It should also be called out. No big deal.
    Next…if there’s not…and it’s a smaller township just needing a bid…I just use that stuff anyway.
( I’m out of breath…well…my typing fingers are out of breath. )

Brian…bid the job. Bid it like you see it. Try to get it. It’s like anything else…your first will be a bit nerve racking…the 5th…will be fun.
    ( I just bid a “Wally World”…what a silly group of specs. Gimmee a road anyday. )
I hope I organized everything well enough.
    I hope I didn’t skip anything.
    Let me know.
AND…let me know how the first job goes.
    Last…sorry for the delay. …storms…power outages…no internet…aaaggghhh…!
    ( I’m at Cop O Joes”…online…!)
    Keep in touch.
    Dan

in reply to: Entrance ramps stain? #6464

    Hey Stripe Guy
    Excellent post.
    I used SW Stain. It was a stock Grey. I also used a Stock RED…get it…?…Ohio State…
Anyhow…there are stock = returnable colors.
Try to choose one of those colors. I’m sure they have a Yellow.
Next…it’s just like paint. It’s not thin. And…I rolled it too. It stinks too. It smells like cleaning agent or ?…have some ventilation.
AND…I also added Shark Grip…just like you posted. All is well.
Next…I would advise clients of the slip hazards of wet, outside paint, stain.
Then, I’d also NOT…try to do the entire step. It’s not necessary. We can all see steps. AND…often times that decision isn’t one that came from “Corporate”. It’s the decision of ONE past manager or middle manager…or…?
Is it “Right” or is it “Wrong”…I don’t care. IT IS a matter of Good, Better Best.
AND…it’s best to either not paint…or do as we’ve discovered.
NEXT…here’s a “thing” between you and I…word the bid…like this.
OPTION A) Stain the steps using SW with Shark Grip…( word that more appropriately ).
Option B) Add a Non slip application tape. ( Word that better too. )
Option C) Leave it alone or add a hard sign, arrow…etc…Watch Step. ( Word that better )
Here’s my thought…in a perfect world…maybe that client can then see…I’ll take the non slip, with the tape application and I’ll buy a sign too.
OR…in an IMperfect world…it’s their choice to choose something on that page.
    Does that make sense?
Bottom line…”I wouldn’t do that. Leave it alone, let me put a non slip or a sign there…or something. We’ll both be exposed to a one in a million bad day experience…or worse…breaking some’s elbow on a fall.
NEXT…if you’re talking about the H/C Ramps…that are outside at the sidewalks…here’s what I do.
I tape a triangle. It’s ONLY on the slope…which makes no sense…but it’s small and that’s where the terrain changes elevation. The triangle is the shape of the slope. It’s about24″ to 30″ long…x…6″ near the curb side.
Next…here’s an idea…I wonder if we can add some rubberized mat there…that’s the shape of the triangle. OR…here’s another option to add to the bid…add a rubberized 24″ x 24″ rubberized NO SLIP mat there. Let’s face it…people may not slip…but the Wheel Chair may no be able to get up the small ramp in Winter conditions. It may be the best solution.
    Did I help at all?
    Let me know.
    Stripe Guy…thanks.

in reply to: How to paint A curved line #6458

    Hello Randy…how are you?
    Hope all is well.
I would have to try that…and it would be worth trying. It’s too simple to take the gun out of the cradle…spin the Horizontal Bar…and re-insert the gun…angle it to the side and go. It sounds like that would alleviate “hand spray touch ups”.
I’ve always just released the front tire and sprayed.
That said…I’ve also helped another striper. He would take the gun into his hand and drive slowly…while spraying the asphalt curb that surrounded the flower beds. He’d spray Right Handed. He’d hold the Left Handle Bar while releasing the front tire…and drive…and spray. It looked great. I do remember him going slowly around the curved ends and even driving backwards a couple times. I also think his backed ached a little after the three long, hot dog shaped islands were through…but they looked great and it was relatively quick.
SO…turn the gun…spray the curb…or ride…and spray the curves by hand…releasing the front tire too.
Randy, it was good to hear from you. Let me know how these work out.
Look me up if you visit Memphis.

in reply to: Chlorinated Rubber Paint? #6455

    Hello Stripe Guy 2
    … personally…I’d pass. I’ve used CR. It’s much like Oil Based Paint. It sprays fine…etc. I wouldn’t change tips unless I had a snag somewhere. ( I use Graco 319 tips…almost always. I have used 323 for the Hot Line…going fast on a road…etc. )
But…I’d want to check to see if the paint was any good. Open a can. Even though it’s “New” paint…which it may not be…THAT…new…it may be “Old” enough to allow air into the bucket…and still have a “pancake” skin across the top. OR…worse…all lumpy pudding.
Bottom line…I’d need to know how “Old” it is. If you’re in a state that allows that paint…it may be fine. $5.00 per gallon.
If you’re in a State that does not allow for CL to be made anymore…but YES…you can use up the stock you have…again…how old is it?
    Last…and again…personally…it’s not worth the risk…for me.
Oh…I believe the thinning agent in Mineral Spirits. Check the cost. I haven’t purchased it for so long…I don’t know.
